Brand new they run around $900 usd, but you can pick them up used pretty cheap. It is dot matrix (impact printer) with a ribbon.
As a tech, I can say that there are only about 3 components on these that ever go bad and typically it is from misuse or abuse. These are beasts that have extremely low maintenance and will run forever.

I intend to let is accumulate data and news over the night and wish to print them out in the morning as a morning briefing/newspaper alternative (but that is all on the coding and software side of the project), I don't intend on letting this thing run 24/7. I don't know if laser or ink jet is better for such an application. So I started wondering if all printers accept endless paper (they don't, I found out) and now I am looking for an affordable alternative (also second hand is considered if there is a model out there you swear by). I took a quick look at the prices of such dot matrix printers and well, they are out of my budget. So, I've been to the SFMOMA back in September last year and was deeply impressed by a modern iteration of Hans Haacke's " News" installation (for those who don't know what this is: a dot matrix printer with endless paper printing the RSS feeds of various news outlets in live time). I am (very) new to this subreddit but I thought you might be the right folks for my question.
